Heating Tips

In the Bronx, Manhattan, and Westchester County areas, our cold winters provide unique challenges for residents during the winter.  At Pullum/Sibling, we are a part of these communities and have some suggestions that may help you to save money during the coldest months and to keep your home as heat efficient as possible.

Install a programmable thermostat. These "smart" devices automatically adjusts room temperature settings to energy-saving levels when you're sleeping or away from home, eliminating wasteful energy usage. The Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that a homeowner can save approximately 10 percent per year on heating and cooling costs by setting temperatures back 10 to 15 percent of the comfort level eight hours each day.

Weatherize your home with weather-stripping around doors and windows and insulation in crawl spaces and the attic.

Use these tips on a regular basis to reduce the cost of your heating bill

  • Find areas of your home where air can potentially be escaping or entering.  Areas such as doors, windows, fireplaces are normally the worst culprits. Seal air leaks on the exterior of your home with caulking. Install storm windows and doors. Insulate your water heater and hot water pipes. Seal and insulate ducts. Replace old windows or apply clear plastic film.
  • In the morning when the sun is out open blinds and curtains to let the sun in; not only does this help to heat your home naturally but also adds a great amount of "sunshine" to your day.

These are just a few suggestions to help reduce the cost of your energy bills and to improve the overall ability of your home to be heating efficient.  For more advice, heating tips, or questions fill out the contact us page or call us at (718) 409-3600.
